Boost for Barramundi Farm
Gippsland will become home to the world’s largest indoor barramundi aquaculture farm with financial support from the Federal Government.
The Federal Government has announced a $30 million grant for Opal and Mainstream’s Latrobe Valley Aquaculture project at Maryvale Mill in the Latrobe Valley.
Seaweed Study underway
Food & Fibre Gippsland’s Elena Nauta recently joined the Deakin University Blue Carbon Lab team on the University’s Lady Bay work-boat as they surveyed seaweed species, environmental conditions, and growing locations in the beautiful Gippsland Lakes. This work is part of the Smart Specialisation Program’s study into the feasibility of a commercial seaweed growing industry in the region.
Seaweed Jobs and Skills Workshop
As part of the ongoing work to assess the viability of a seaweed industry for Gippsland, a Seaweed Jobs and Skills Workshop and key Stakeholder discussion group was held online in February.
Smart Specialisation team - Elena
Elena Nauta joined the GS3 team at Food & Fibre Gippsland (F&FG) in December 2020 as an Industry Placement Program participant through Federation University, and has continued working on the Sustainable Emerging Commodities (Seaweed and Insect Farming) stream of GS3 as a Graduate Project Officer upon the completion of her placement in July 2021 and Bachelor of Food and Nutritional Science in December 2021.
