Sustainable Packaging Project

Businesses are turning to sustainable packaging for many reasons, including to meet the 2025 Sustainable Packaging targets, corporate social responsibility, reducing their carbon footprint, reducing unnecessary packaging and waste, increasing sales - and because consumers are demanding it.

The Entrepreneurs Programme and the Australian Institute of Packaging is inviting eligible SME’s to participate in the Sustainable Packaging SMART Project.

This project is focussed on improving sustainable packaging practices within businesses with revenues between $1.5m and $100 million.

There will be access to industry networks and expert resources along with up to $20,000 ( matched) grant funding to progress sustainable packaging goals and increase capability to meet the 2025 targets.

Sustainable Packaging ultimately ensures that the design provides the lowest possible environmental impact compared to existing or conventional packaging. Sometimes achieving this can be challenging, particularly when balancing various environmental criteria with other functional and commercial considerations.

There is an impressive number of packaging designs across Australia and New Zealand that have received Australian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards. Nearly all the winners have then gone on to receive global recognition for their innovative Sustainable Packaging Designs through the WorldStar Packaging Awards.

A few have also received WorldStar Packaging Sustainable Packaging Special Awards which is the most prestigious award in the world.

Participants in the Sustainable Packaging SMART Project are also offered up to 12 months direct individual business assistance, along with collective peer group knowledge and skill development activities.

To qualify for this project, businesses need to complete the Expressions of Interest Pre-Qualifying Questionnaire - when this is completed a representative from the Entrepreneurs Programme will be in touch.

There are also some additional resources to offer advice on sustainable packaging trends, actions businesses can take to ensure their products are packaged in eco-friendly ways and how to design with sustainability in mind.

Hosted by AusIndustry’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme, these two recorded webinars are tailored for industry, so attendees can learn from those who have done it and leave with a path to success.
