Crafting excellence in the Latrobe Valley

In the beer realm, where some see a mere beverage, craft beer enthusiasts discern an art form. For those who appreciate the fusion of quality ingredients and a meticulous commitment to brewing complex flavour profiles, discovering exceptional brews is an adventure.

Jimmy Krekelberg, a seasoned brewer with a global perspective, returned to Gippsland with a mission. After honing his craft in the northern hemisphere and gaining invaluable experience at renowned establishments like Stewart Brewing in Edinburgh and De Molen in the Netherlands, Jimmy's dream took shape in the heart of the Latrobe Valley.

In 2021, the doors to Good Land Brewing Co. swung open in Traralgon, marking the culmination of Jimmy's ambition. With a background in mechanical engineering and a hands-on understanding of small-scale and automated brewing processes, Jimmy brought a wealth of knowledge to his venture.

Jimmy explains. ”I like to tell people we’re not boutiquey or fancy, it’s just good beer.”

Locals quickly rallied behind the Krekelberg brothers - Jimmy and Jesse - as Good Land Brewing Co. earned accolades for its award-winning beers, making the brewery a beacon for enthusiasts not even three years into its journey.

Whether your palate craves a light crispness, extra maltiness, or a triple hop sensation, Good Land Brewing Co. promises a diverse selection to satisfy every taste.

“Not many others around here age their beer in barrels,” says Jimmy. “We have whiskey and rum barrels from Melbourne and Sydney and recently we imported tequila barrels from Mexico.”

While the brewery's core range enjoys a steadfast local following, its influence extends beyond Gippsland. With their beers on tap in various venues and notable wholesale trade, Good Land Brewing Co. has ventured into international markets, exporting to Japan and New Zealand.

The collaborative spirit is alive and well at Good Land Brewing Co., with partnerships formed with breweries both regionally and internationally.

Sourcing malt from craft malt facilities, also small family-owned businesses like his own, Jimmy and his team are able to really drill down to specific grain and malting profiles.

“We can request grain from irrigated or non-irrigated paddocks; specific roast types to match our needs. Each batch is fully traceable,” explains Jimmy.

Committed to reducing their environmental impact, Good Land Brewing Co.’s spent grain, also known as draff, is sent to a farmer in Flynn as livestock feed. After the fermentation process, this becomes an easily digestible product for cattle.

The accolades continue to pour in, with the Gippsland brewery’s Golden Beach Pale Ale nominated for the prestigious Greatest Australasian Beer Spectacular at the @GABSfestival Hottest 100 beers.

Beyond the beer taps, Good Land Brewing Co.'s spacious venue has become a hotspot for weddings, events, and casual Friday nights with friends. The brewery's ample open space invites patrons to savour the crafted brews while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere that has become synonymous with this unique tap room and eatery.

As Good Land Brewing Co. marks its place on the map, it's clear that Gippsland has positioned itself as a notable craft beer destination for those seeking the perfect blend of craftsmanship, innovation, and community spirit.
