Churchill Fellowship applications open

After a lapse because of COVID-19, the Winston Churchill Trust is once again offering everyday Australians the life-changing opportunity to travel overseas and investigate a topic they are passionate about.

Around 100 people from diverse walks of life will be funded in the current round so they can travel in 2023 to explore international best practice and innovation in a field of their choosing.

Aside from general fellowships, this year the Trust is also offering the new Saskia Beer Churchill Fellowship to help passionate food lovers pursue innovative, artisanal, sustainable and community-focussed approaches to food production; and the Hort Innovation Churchill Fellowship to cultivate new ideas in horticulture.

Because of the pandemic we are not holding an information session for prospective applicants in your region this year. Instead, we are running a series of live virtual sessions that are accessible online. These sessions provide valuable inspiration and advice about the application process, and are proving extremely popular.

Each event is based around a theme, however people are welcome to participate whether or not it aligns with their area of interest.

Upcoming events in the series include:

  • Manufacturing and small business on March 23, featuring Australian Vinegar CEO, Ian Henderson, from Queensland, who studied manufacturing vinegar from produce in over supply in Australia as a way to develop alternative markets.

  • Accessibility on Tuesday, March 29, featuring Michael Small, a well-known Tasmanian advocate for the rights of people with a disability, who received the Rodney Warmington Churchill Fellowship to identify the most effective ways to ensure buildings are accessible to people with disability.

  • Arts on Thursday March 31, featuring Patricia Adjei, who is director of First Nations arts and culture with the Australia Council for the Arts, and investigated the protection of Indigenous cultural rights.

Registration for the virtual sessions is essential.

Applications for a Churchill Fellowship can be made online until 28 April 2022.
